Spotlight: Hope the Mission

Please give a warm welcome to Hope the Mission, one of our newer housing working group members!

Tanaz Golshan, Director of Government Affairs and Community Engagement, shared a little bit about Hope the Mission at this month’s meeting.

  • Hope the Mission is a housing provider that got its start in the San Fernando Valley, but has expanded beyond the Valley during its 14 years of operation and is now growing into Bakersfield, San Bernardino, and elsewhere as well. Hope the Mission manages 22 sites, and 2,300 beds, through a mixture of properties they own, and others they manage on behalf of cities. Their services include not only housing but also re-entry and sober living programs, and mental health services.

Spotlight: UnidosUS, Building California’s Future: Latino Homeownership

Esmeralda Lopez, California State Director of Policy and Advocacy at UnidosUS and a co-author of the report, gave us a summary of some of the key findings of their new report on Latino homeownership in California.

  • The study found that while the Latino homeownership rate in California continues to be lower than that of non-Hispanic whites, Latinos driving growth in homeownership: Latinos accounted for 76% of homeownership growth between 2012 and 2021.

  • They also found that low housing supply in key markets is weighing down the Latino homeownership rate in California. While there are 1.9 million Latinos aged 18–45 in California who are considered “mortgage ready,” there are not enough homes to meet demand.
