Action Items:

Join us on April 23 in Sacramento for a day of meetings with legislators

  • On April 23, members of the Housing Working Group will convene in Sacramento to meet with legislative offices to discuss the impact of California’s housing crisis on their communities and the solutions needed to create more affordable, accessible, and equitable rental and homeownership opportunities. These conversations will be focused on broad solutions and will not include lobbying for specific bills. We hope as many members as possible can attend to share your stories. If you are interested or plan to attend, please fill out this survey by March 15: HWG Sacramento Day Interest Form. We will discuss logistics, topics, and other details on next month’s call and California YIMBY will have travel funds available for those who need it.

The website and principles page are what we share when reaching out to legislators and other state leaders to ask them to speak at our regular monthly meetings and can provide additional profile for your organization with these decision makers. Please email emily@cayimby.org if you would like to add your logo to the website.

Summary: Legislative Guest: Assembly Transportation Chair Lori Wilson

  • Assemblymember Wilson emphasized her understanding of the importance of homeownership as a wealth building tool. She also shared her perspective on the implications of our historic transportation choices and the ways they can perpetuate inequalities.

  • As Assembly Transportation Chair, Assemblymember Wilson sees transportation choice as an important indicator of economic mobility and intends to use her new role to fight for policies that will help make transportation options and systems, and the opportunities they can create, more equitable and inclusive.

  • She shared two bills she is working on related to housing:

    • AB 3057 (Wilson) - sponsored by California YIMBY

      • Technical fix to ADU law extending CEQA exemptions granted to standard ADU ordinances to Junior ADU ordinances.

    • AB 2785 (Wilson) - sponsored by the Women’s Foundation

      • Making security deposits and application fees reimbursable

  • Finally, Assemblymember Wilson shared that she relies on groups like yours to marry data with real stories and help keep legislators accountable to what’s happening on the ground.
