San Diego Small Lot Subdivisions
The Problem: Single family zoning was created in the early 1900s to ensure that Black, Brown, and poor white families didn’t live with more affluent white families. The U.S. Supreme Court ruled at the time that not renting or selling a home to someone based on their race was unconstitutional.
The Solution: LISC San Diego is asking the City of San Diego to amendment a law passed in 2015 – the Small Lot Subdivision Ordinance – and make the law effective throughout all of San Diego, not just in multi-family zoned areas. Extending the ordinance city-wide will provide more middle income housing for ownership and wealth building while lowering rents and ensuring that communities like Kensington, Mission Hills, Point Loma and La Jolla have housing available to working class San Diegans especially families of color. By doing this the City will: 1) End the Legal Apartheid enforced through single-family zoning 2) Provide wealth building opportunities for Black and Brown families through homeownership.
